Carisoprodol, marketed by the brand name Pain O Soma 350mg, is used to treat musculoskeletal pain. In the US, it is a Schedule IV controlled substance. In 1959, carisoprodol received approval for medical use in the United States. The European Union withdrew its endorsement of it in 2008. It is available as a generic medication. It was the 343rd most frequently prescribed medication in the US in 2019 with over 800,000 prescriptions written.
Carisoprodol acts quickly, within 30 minutes, and the aforementioned effects last for between two and six hours. It has a half-life of about eight hours and is excreted by the kidneys after being metabolised in the liver by the oxidase isozyme. Standard doses may result in higher concentrations of carisoprodol in patients with low levels of poor metabolizers (up-to a four-fold increase). Carisoprodol’s potential for addiction may be explained by the fact that a sizable portion of it is metabolised to meprobamate, a known addictive substance (meprobamate levels reach higher peak plasma levels than carisoprodol itself following administration).
